OKC 1889 FC Joins The League For Clubs: A New Chapter For OKC Soccer

OKC 1889 Joins The League for Clubs

Coming off a 2024 Heartland Conference Championship in the NPSL, OKC 1889 FC has marked another step in its history by joining The League for Clubs, or simply ‘The League.’ Partnered with the WPSL (Women’s Premiere Soccer League), The League for Clubs offers an innovative approach to competition and ownership. After years of success in the UPSL and NPSL, OKC 1889 FC is thrilled to take the Purple and Black to a new competition. With the inaugural season starting in May 2025, OKC 1889 FC looks forward to bringing high-level soccer back to OKC.

The League for Clubs

The League for Clubs represents a fresh approach to amateur soccer in the United States, where clubs are both participants and stakeholders in the organization's success. From The League for Clubs:

“Member teams in The League will hold a stake in its success through revenue sharing and ownership credits. These credits will be converted into equity if a merger or acquisition occurs. The League is committed to distributing 20% of all net income to teams based on a formula that considers league longevity, with the money credited each year toward the following year's membership dues. In the event of a sale, member teams will receive 51% of all net proceeds. This structure ensures that clubs directly benefit from the league's growth and success.”

Central Division - League for Clubs

The League for Clubs Central Division

OKC 1889 FC will compete in the Central Division, facing off against clubs from surrounding states - Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, and Kansas. This regional approach helps manage travel costs, creates natural rivalries, and builds stronger connections with local fans. The Central Division promises to deliver exciting matchups and foster regional pride among supporters.

"Geographically, this league makes sense," explains Team Owner Dustin Hooker. "We face a variety of teams from different states in our region and play against higher-level competition."

Path to the US Open Cup

One of the most exciting aspects of joining The League for Clubs is the potential pathway to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. By winning your division and a qualifying win percentage, teams can qualify for this U.S Open Cup, where they can face teams from all levels of US soccer, including Major League Soccer and USL clubs. OKC 1889 FC looks to emulate the same success as fellow Central Division rival, Tulsa Athletic, who has made 4-straight appearances in the U.S. Open Cup.

Impact on Oklahoma City Soccer

This new step for Oklahoma City soccer fans means access to high-quality competition and a chance to support their local team in meaningful matches. OKC 1889 FC's participation in The League for Clubs demonstrates the club's commitment to growing the sport in Oklahoma City while providing a platform for local talent to shine. If you’re interested in joining the team, tryouts will be held in April 2025. Stay tuned for details on the exact Date and Location for our 2025 Team Tryouts.
